East London carries two addresses in this directory and they could hardly be less alike. Shoreditch sits on the City’s northern shoulder, a parish of furniture workshops and printing houses that turned over to studios, bars and hotels through the 1990s and 2000s; Rivington Street, Redchurch Street and the Old Street approaches still set its tone. North Greenwich is a 150-acre peninsula wrapped by 1.6 miles of the Thames, reclaimed from a gasworks and given over to The O2 — opened in 2000 as the Millennium Dome and converted to an arena in 2007 — with the Design District beside it.
So the hire product splits cleanly. Shoreditch answers the party that wants a raw room, a late licence and a crowd arriving on foot: rooftops, warehouse floors, hotel basements and private rooms above kitchens doing serious work. North Greenwich answers scale — arena audiences, exhibition halls and corporate hospitality — and very little in between. A private dinner of forty is a Shoreditch question; a launch for two thousand is a peninsula one. The region is thin by count, and that is a fact about where the rooms are rather than a gap we intend to pad.
Both are well served, and differently. Shoreditch has Old Street, Liverpool Street and the Overground within a few minutes on foot, so a City guest list arrives in ten. North Greenwich has the Jubilee line, the river boats and the cable car, and it holds a great deal of parking, which starts to matter once numbers pass a thousand. Shoreditch runs late by habit and by licence. The peninsula empties quickly after an arena show, so a private room out there wants a transport plan of its own.
