Altaura: Music Consultancy for Hospitality

Music strategy for premium hospitality

A corridor lined with coloured vinyl records, leading to a red lacquered room

Sound is part of how a room is designed.

Altaura is a music and experience design studio for hotels, restaurants and bars. It plans sound the way an architect plans light: as part of the room, from the first arrival to the final drink.

Music sets the pace of a room and its energy, and it is what guests remember. Altaura gives it the same care as interiors, lighting and service.

Client and project figures are Altaura’s own count.

Altaura began with a DJ who kept noticing the same thing. Doug Marshall spent a decade on the decks and on brand work, playing sets for Warner Music and Armani and building sonic identities for hotels, restaurants and retail groups. The music was rarely the problem. What was missing was a plan for it.

He founded Altaura in London in 2020 to supply that plan, with Max von Zeffman as co-founder. Max came from marketing and advertising for Disney and Bentley and from work with BBC R&D, and he gave the studio its second discipline: behavioural insight, set beside the musical ear.

Gaby Morse, who ran events across North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific, looks after clients and partnerships. Lucy Cook, head of music, is a curator and DJ with a background in A&R who has played Glastonbury and the Tate Modern. Pete Rutherford has spent two decades designing audio systems, from national retail roll-outs to single boutiques.

In a nutshell, Altaura designs how a space sounds. It writes a music strategy for the brand and each part of the day, curates from its own licensed catalogue (the Soundaura, refreshed every month), tunes the sound system and the acoustics, and books DJs and live musicians where a moment calls for one. Altaura calls this atmosphere alchemy. In practice it is measured in how long guests stay, what they spend and what they say about the room afterwards.

Today the studio works from Fitzrovia in London and from Santa Monica, for hotels, restaurants and bars, shops, workplaces and wellness spaces.

What Altaura does

  1. Music strategy

A sound plan matched to the brand, the audience and the rhythm of each space. Behavioural insight and the realities of service decide how the music guides flow and brings guests back.

  2. Music curation

Licensed playlists, picked track by track by Altaura’s curators to suit the concept and each room within it. Dayparts, seasons and the changing energy of the room are handled through regular updates.

  3. AV and acoustics

Advice on sound systems, zoning, playback and acoustic behaviour, from early plans to tuning on site. The aim is a room that sounds clear and comfortable in every corner.

  4. Live entertainment

DJs and live musicians chosen to fit the concept, from well-known names to intimate performances. Altaura sources the acts, briefs them and manages the programme.

Selected work

  • Guests at the mirrored bar of Langan’s Brasserie in the evening, under shelves of bottles

    London

    Langan’s Brasserie

Music direction from the design stage, a reopening soundtrack and a live programme that included Mark Ronson. Curated playlists now move between the restaurant and the private club.

  • The bar at Saikindō in Abu Dhabi under a coffered wooden ceiling, with red bar stools and table lamps

    Abu Dhabi

    Saikindō

Music strategy, acoustics, the AV specification, a vinyl library and a DJ programme for a listening bar. Sound was planned as part of the design from the start, never added afterwards.

  • Fairmont Kea Lani from the air, its white buildings set in palms above the beach and the surf

    Maui

    Fairmont Kea Lani

A sound plan for every zone of the resort, from calm in the spa to energy at the bar by evening. Speaker placement was tuned with the installers to keep the hotel’s look intact.

Altaura bring an unrivalled catalogue of music and the hottest live acts in London. They understand who we are, and encompass that into our brand sound. Every beat breathes life into our spaces.
