/ About Bath & Somerset▾
Bath grew around hot springs. The Romans built a temple beside them in the first century AD, and the bathing complex of Aquae Sulis was added to over the centuries that followed. Edgar was crowned king of all England in the Saxon abbey in 973, and the present Bath Abbey began in 1499. The Georgian city followed: John Wood the Younger designed the Royal Crescent, thirty houses in Bath stone built between 1767 and 1775. Bath was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1987, and again in 2021 as one of the Great Spa Towns of Europe. To the south, Bruton is a small Somerset market town on the River Brue.
The hire product is the country house, often Georgian or older and built in the local stone. A client chooses between a house let whole, with exclusive use of its rooms, gardens and bedrooms; an estate, which adds parkland and space for a marquee; and a country-house hotel, which sells private dining and function rooms with a kitchen and guest rooms in place. The houses spread from Bath into Somerset around Bruton and Castle Cary, and into Wiltshire at Colerne. Capacity is set by the largest room, the grounds and what a marquee adds. Because guests stay, the bedroom count matters as much as the dining figure.
Bath & Somerset is the furthest of the country areas from London. Great Western Railway runs from London Paddington to Bath Spa in around 1 hour 20 minutes, and the last trains to London leave Bath at about eleven. Castle Cary, the station for Bruton, takes from one and a half to over two hours, with far fewer trains back in the evening. By road the M4 carries the journey west. An evening event here is usually an overnight stay, with guests arriving in the afternoon and leaving after breakfast.
