/ About
Kitchen Table occupies a single horseshoe counter wrapped around an open kitchen, reached through an understated frontage on Charlotte Street. Nineteen guests face the pass, where James Knappett and his team cook, plate and talk through each course as it is served. There are no printed menus and no separate dining room; the meal is the kitchen at work, narrated as it happens. Knappett opened the restaurant in 2012, won a first Michelin star in 2014 and a second in 2018, which it has held since.
For a private event the format is its own argument. The whole room is taken as an exclusive buyout, so a host and their guests have the counter, the kitchen and the team to themselves for the evening. The cooking follows the day's produce rather than a fixed carte, and the wine list is long and seriously chosen, with pairings guided by the floor.
It suits a small, considered gathering rather than a party: a landmark birthday, a close celebration, a client dinner where the food and the people around the counter are the whole event. Numbers are held to the nineteen seats, which is the point of it.
