Daphne's

Daphne's has anchored Brompton Cross since 1964, when the casting director Daphne Rye opened it at the height of Chelsea's Sixties heyday and made it a haunt of the theatre and film set. Six decades on it remains a neighbourhood Italian in the truest sense, glamorous yet unstudied, run with the warmth of a long-serving floor team. The cooking follows the seasons of traditional Italy: simple, generous plates that never try too hard.

The heart of the restaurant for private events is the Conservatory at the rear, a glass-roofed room of arched antique mirrors, painted garden murals and a working brick fireplace, set over a bold monochrome tiled floor and shaded by fringed parasols among potted lemon and olive trees. It is one of the prettiest private rooms in SW3, equally at ease laid as a single long table for a seated dinner or cleared for a standing reception. The main dining room carries the same Mediterranean spirit through etched-glass screens, hand-painted panels and soft coral lampshades.

For larger gatherings the whole restaurant is available for exclusive hire, and the in-house events team can arrange live music or a DJ through the venue's entertainment programme. With its intimate scale and serious atmosphere, Daphne's suits birthdays, anniversaries and celebrations that want a sense of occasion without the formality of a hotel ballroom.
