The Berkeley puts red ski gondolas on its rooftop

2 min read

Private cabins for up to six and a sharing menu of raclette and chocolate fondue turn the roof of The Berkeley into an Alpine dining room above Hyde Park this winter.

Every cabin on the roof of The Berkeley this winter comes with a bell, and ringing it brings more Champagne. The cabins are red ski gondolas, curtained in gingham and strung with lights, with small Christmas trees between them. From their windows the view runs across Knightsbridge and Belgravia to Hyde Park, where the Ferris wheel of Winter Wonderland is lit after dark.

Gondolas above Hyde Park

The Berkeley Rooftop Cabins open on 13 November, and the hotel calls the season an Alpine sanctuary. Each cabin is a small private dining room for up to six, under a canopy of lights. A lift runs straight up from the hotel lobby on Wilton Place. Inside, a wooden table sits between benches of checked cushions, lit by a pleated lamp, with the red window frames all round.

In summer this roof holds the hotel’s rooftop pool, which it hires out for parties in the evening sun. The cabins take over for the winter, and they can be hired too: one gondola for a dinner, or every cabin and the whole rooftop for a party.

Early in the week a cabin can be booked for two. From Wednesday afternoon to Sunday the smallest party is four, and the hotel takes bookings for groups of up to twelve.

Raclette, truffle and chocolate fondue

There is one menu, and it is made for sharing. It starts in the lift on the way up, with a glass of mulled wine or a non-alcoholic cider, or Laurent-Perrier Champagne in its place.

At the table, traditional Swiss raclette comes with sourdough, charcuterie and pickles. The dauphinoise is finished with shaved black truffle, and buttered new potatoes and a winter salad of chicory, butternut squash, sunflower seeds and pomegranate sit beside it. A winter cocktail list runs alongside.

Pudding is a milk chocolate fondue, with fruit and sweet treats for dipping. After it come toasted s’mores made with gingerbread men. With raclette, truffle and two puddings, it is a menu for the coldest nights of the year.

The Berkeley Rooftop Cabins open from 13 November 2026, daily from 12:00, with the last sitting at 21:00. Sharing menu £90 per person; Laurent-Perrier Champagne in the lift £10 more.
