Noah Kahan was born in Strafford, Vermont in 1997, a town of a thousand people, and writes about exactly that: staying, leaving, the winter, and the friends who did not get out. He made two records that did modestly well, Busyhead in 2019 and I Was / I Am in 2021, and then made Stick Season in 2022 and the ground moved. It spent more than three years inside the top fifteen in Britain, a length of stay almost nothing achieves, and it did it on word of mouth rather than on radio.
The songs are folk in shape — acoustic guitar, banjo, a voice that cracks deliberately — and stadium-sized in the way audiences sing them back. He has been open about writing the second half of that rise as it was happening to him. He has been open about the mental health that runs through the songs and has put money from the tours into it, which is part of why the audience treats the shows as something other than a concert.
The Great Divide is the fourth album, produced with Gabe Simon and Aaron Dessner, and it is about the aftermath.
