Hubert Blanc-Francard, known as Boombass, met Philippe Cerboneschi, known as Zdar, in 1988. Zdar was assisting Boombass’s father, the sound engineer Dominique Blanc-Francard, at his Paris studio. They first produced records for the rapper MC Solaar.
In 1996 they released “Foxxy”, their first house track as Cassius. “Cassius 1999” entered the UK Singles Chart at number seven, and Au Rêve brought “The Sound of Violence” in 2002. Ibifornia in 2016 drew Pharrell Williams, Cat Power and Mike D into the studio.
Zdar also produced and engineered Phoenix, Chromeo and the Beastie Boys at his own Motorbass studio. Jay-Z and Kanye West sampled “I <3 U So” on Watch the Throne in 2011. Zdar died in Paris in June 2019, two days before the release of Dreems, the final Cassius album.
