/ About
Sumi is Endo Kazutoshi's Notting Hill restaurant, the more relaxed counterpart to his Michelin-starred omakase counter Endo at the Rotunda in White City. Named after the chef's mother, it sits on a corner of Westbourne Grove behind a muted grey frontage, and the room is deliberately understated: pale ash wood, soft lighting, a Muji-like calm that lets the food do the talking. Head chef Christian Onia runs an open kitchen and robata grill along one side, and the menu turns on the Kazutoshi family's handrolled temaki, à la carte sushi and charcoal-grilled robata.
The space is intimate, around sixty covers across a single dining room, with a pavement terrace that comes into its own from spring through summer. Critics and the guides have taken to it quickly, drawn by nigiri and robata that carry Endo's precision at a more everyday register.
For private events the whole restaurant is available to hire, with in-house catering and the terrace as an outdoor extension. The scale suits a seated dinner, a milestone celebration or a considered corporate booking rather than a large party, and the pared-back room is an easy backdrop to dress.
