London's first skyscraper hotel opened on 17 April 1963, twenty-eight storeys of William B. Tabler's concrete frame standing directly opposite Hyde Park. Six decades on, a phased refurbishment has reworked the public floors: the arrival hall is brass, marble and a lattice of light overhead, and it sets the register for everything above it.
The Grand Ballroom is the room the building is known for. At 937 square metres it is among the largest hotel ballrooms in London, approached through its own reception foyer and a sweeping staircase, lit by crystal chandeliers, and it takes 900 for a seated dinner or 1,250 for a reception. It divides into three sections when a smaller room is wanted, and the dinner-dance layout is a published format rather than an improvisation. Alongside it sit the Wellington Ballroom, whose windows run the length of Park Lane and Hyde Park, and the Crystal Palace, Harvest and Serpentine suites for gatherings in the low hundreds.
On the 28th floor, Shanghai Me now occupies the room that was Galvin at Windows until 2024. Its Bund Lounge is the space we would put a DJ in: a green-and-amber deco room with a booth, its own bar and a smoking terrace, holding 80 standing with the city in every window. Two private dining rooms sit off the restaurant, the Dragon's Eye looking out over the Serpentine and the Den screened within the main floor, seating twelve apiece.

Grand Ballroom

Wellington Ballroom
PrivateA first-floor room of 191 square metres with panoramic windows along Park Lane and out across Hyde Park, columns and crystal chandeliers. It seats 180 for dinner and holds 500 for a reception, and the daylight makes it the natural choice for a daytime event that runs into the evening.
Harvest Suite
PrivateA 133-square-metre function room with daylight, seating 100 for dinner and holding 200 for a reception. It sits between the ballrooms and the smaller suites in scale, and suits a reception that needs room to move without taking the Grand Ballroom.
Crystal Palace Suite
PrivateA 185-square-metre suite with views over Hyde Park, a coffered ceiling and mirrored walls that carry the light. It seats 110 for dinner and takes 180 standing, and is the room the hotel puts forward most often for weddings.
Serpentine Suite
PrivateAn 81-square-metre daylit suite that reconfigures across seated, cabaret and theatre layouts. It seats 30 for dinner and holds 100 for a reception, and works as a breakout or a briefing room alongside a larger event elsewhere in the hotel.
Bund Lounge
PrivateThe bar room of Shanghai Me on the 28th floor, and the most music-ready space in the building. Green velvet banquettes curve around low tables beneath fluted deco uplighters, the windows carry the skyline from Hyde Park to the west, and the room comes with a DJ booth, its own bar and a dedicated smoking terrace. It holds 80 standing, with lounge seating for 54.
Marlborough Suite
PrivateA 38-square-metre daylit suite seating 12 around a single table, or 50 standing for a small reception. The most contained of the hotel's bookable spaces, suited to a private meeting held alongside a larger event.
The Den
PrivateScreened within Shanghai Me's main dining room by lacquered fretwork panels, the Den seats twelve at a single table under scalloped silk pendants. No view, by design: it is the more discreet of the two private rooms on the 28th floor.
The Dragon's Eye
PrivateA private dining room at the front of Shanghai Me, twenty-eight floors up, with a single round table for twelve beneath a stained-glass roundel. Bay windows look straight out over the Serpentine and Hyde Park, and the room has its own service.
