/ About
Ham Yard Hotel opened in 2014 on a sliver of land between Soho and Piccadilly, the work of Tim and Kit Kemp's Firmdale group. It is built around its own village square, a pedestrian courtyard set with a twelve-foot bronze by Tony Cragg and a stand of mature oak trees, so the hotel reads less as a single building than as a small quarter of the West End that happens to have a front desk. Kit Kemp's interiors run throughout: layered pattern, commissioned art and colour worn with confidence.
For events the hotel keeps a dedicated floor of interconnecting rooms set around a generous reception area, each flexible enough to move from a dressed dining table to a standing party. The Windmill is the largest, papered in scenic wallpaper and seating sixty for dinner. The Sherwood and Archer are smaller art-hung rooms suited to private dining, boardroom meetings or intimate screenings, while the fabric-lined Drawing Room has a French fireplace and opens onto the leafy terrace.
What sets Ham Yard apart sits below and above those rooms. The Croc is a genuine 1950s bowling alley, shipped over from Texas and rebuilt with a lounge, a bar and a dance floor, and takes up to 250 for a party. The Dive Bar, its walls hand-painted by de Gournay and lit by a neon diver, is built for late DJ-led nights. There is a 190-seat theatre for premieres and presentations, and a roof garden with views across the Soho skyline for receptions of up to a hundred. Few places in the West End let a launch run from screening to bowling to dancefloor without anyone stepping outside.
