Goodman Mayfair

Goodman opened on Maddox Street in 2008 as the group's flagship, and it has run as a New York- and Chicago-inflected grill ever since: mahogany panelling, oxblood leather chairs, brass pendant lamps and walls hung with black-and-white photographs of old market porters and City men. The room is built around the meat. A glass-fronted ageing cabinet sits in full view of the tables, and the day's cuts are chalked up under the heading "The Cut" — USDA Prime from Nebraska, grass-fed British Angus and Galloway, Australian and Japanese Wagyu, all butchered and trimmed by hand each morning.

The wine list is the other half of the address: a deep cellar of Napa, Bordeaux and Rioja that has made Goodman a regular for corporate dinners and long lunches. A private dining room seats up to 28, offered with group menus and reconfigurable layouts for a seated dinner or a smaller board meeting. It suits a private dinner, a client entertainment or a birthday that wants a proper steakhouse setting rather than a party space.
