/ About
Bruce Poole and Nigel Platts-Martin opened Chez Bruce in 1995, on the Bellevue Road corner where Marco Pierre White had run Harveys. Thirty years on it is the rare London restaurant that has never traded on its own reputation: one Michelin star held continuously since January 1999, and a dining room that still fills with the same people who booked it a decade ago. Poole's own line on the place is worth quoting, because it explains the room better than any description of it: restaurants are not about celebrity chefs, managers, owners or design, they are about customers.
The cooking is French with a Mediterranean lean, seasonal, and generous in a way that fine dining rarely is. The wine list is the other half of the argument, long and unusually well priced, with a corkage option for guests who want to bring something from their own cellar. Two dining rooms run over two floors: the ground floor, white-clothed and hung with contemporary pictures, and a smaller room upstairs whose windows look straight out over Wandsworth Common.
That upstairs room is the one to book. Papered in a hand-painted arboreal mural, furnished in red leather and lit by a single gilt convex mirror, it takes a table of up to fourteen for exclusive private use, with a three-course menu and canapés agreed in advance. It is a dining room rather than a party room, and the house is clear about that: the room is yours until 4.30pm for lunch and 11.30pm for dinner. Whole-restaurant hire is by arrangement rather than a published product.
