White Cube previewed Chronotopic, a survey of about 200 works by Gabriel Orozco curated by Briony Fer, at White Cube Bermondsey on Tuesday 15 September 2026. It was the evening before the exhibition opened to the public.
Orozco was born in Jalapa, Veracruz, in 1962, the son of a mural painter who had worked alongside David Alfaro Siqueiros. He trained at the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas and, from 1986, at Madrid’s Círculo de Bellas Artes.
Back in Mexico City in 1987, he ran weekly gatherings with Damián Ortega, Gabriel Kuri and Abraham Cruzvillegas. He worked without a fixed studio, treating drawing, photography, sculpture and installation as one practice built from found and altered objects.
Chronotopic set new pieces beside existing ones in what Orozco has called a chrono-nautical log rather than a chronology. It was the largest Orozco exhibition the gallery had mounted.
The survey returned him to the gallery whose Mason’s Yard building he inaugurated in 2006, with an articulated whale skeleton. The same year marked ten years since the Orozco Garden opened at the South London Gallery, and thirty since the ICA gave him his first London solo show.
