The Betfred Derby Festival 2025

6 – 7 June 2025 Epsom Downs Racecourse · Epsom, Surrey

Aidan O’Brien won both Classics at Epsom in 2025, Minnie Hauk taking the Oaks and Lambourn the Derby, a day apart.

Aidan O’Brien trained both Classic winners at the Derby Festival, held at Epsom Downs Racecourse in Epsom, Surrey, on Friday 6 and Saturday 7 June 2025.

The Derby began at a party held after the first running of the Oaks in 1779. The new race was named for either the host, the 12th Earl of Derby, or one of his guests, and was first run in 1780.

It covers about a mile and a half on the first Saturday of June. It is the middle leg of the Triple Crown, between the 2000 Guineas and the St Leger.

Minnie Hauk, ridden by Ryan Moore, won the Oaks on the Friday by a neck from her Ballydoyle stablemate Whirl. Desert Flower, the 1000 Guineas winner and favourite, finished third. It was O’Brien’s 11th Oaks.

On a wet Saturday afternoon, Lambourn led from the start to win the Derby under Wayne Lordan. He beat Lazy Griff by three and three-quarter lengths. It was the jockey’s first Derby and the trainer’s 11th.

The favourite, Delacroix, finished ninth, and the 2000 Guineas winner Ruling Court was withdrawn that morning. Lambourn later won the Irish Derby.
