Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles opened Georgia Oakley's Sense and Sensibility, a new film of Jane Austen's first novel, at its world premiere in Leicester Square.

Jane Austen’s first novel returned to the screen on Tuesday 15 September 2026, when Georgia Oakley’s Sense and Sensibility had its world premiere at the Odeon Luxe Leicester Square. Daisy Edgar-Jones, its Elinor Dashwood, led the cast on the carpet.

Edgar-Jones was born in London in 1998 and began acting with the National Youth Theatre. Her first television role came in the revival of Cold Feet in 2016, and she went on to War of the Worlds and Under the Banner of Heaven. Marianne in Normal People, the 2020 adaptation of Sally Rooney’s novel, made her name and brought her a Golden Globe nomination, and she has since led Where the Crawdads Sing and Twisters.

Diana Reid wrote the screenplay from Austen’s novel of 1811, and Working Title produced it for Focus Features, with Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner among the producers. When their father dies, the Dashwood sisters lose their fortune and their home: practical Elinor and passionate Marianne, played by Esmé Creed-Miles, move with their mother to a cottage on reduced means and learn the cost of love and marriage in their new society. Oakley made her debut as a director with Blue Jean in 2022.

George MacKay, Fiona Shaw, Frank Dillane, Herbert Nordrum and Bodhi Rae Breathnach joined Edgar-Jones and Creed-Miles at the premiere. Universal released the film in British cinemas on 25 September.
