Florence Pugh and the writer Zoe Kazan brought East of Eden, Netflix’s seven-part adaptation of John Steinbeck’s 1952 novel, to BAFTA on Piccadilly for its UK premiere.

Florence Pugh, an Academy Award nominee for Little Women, attended the UK premiere of East of Eden at BAFTA in St James’s on Friday 25 September 2026. Zoe Kazan, who wrote the seven-part Netflix series from John Steinbeck’s novel, joined her.

Pugh was born in Oxford in 1996 and spent part of her childhood in southern Spain. She made her debut in The Falling and drew attention as the lead of Lady Macbeth.

In 2019 came Fighting with My Family, Midsommar and her Amy March. Oppenheimer, Dune: Part Two and We Live in Time followed, alongside Yelena Belova in the Marvel films.

Kazan is the granddaughter of Elia Kazan, who directed the 1955 film of the novel. An Emmy nominee for Olive Kitteridge, she wrote the screenplay of Ruby Sparks. She ran the series with Jeb Stuart.

Pugh plays Cathy Ames, the novel’s antiheroine, whose life binds her to two generations of the Trask family. Garth Davis and Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre directed. It began streaming on Netflix on 1 October.

Christopher Abbott and Mike Faist play the brothers Adam and Charles, with Ciarán Hinds and Martha Plimpton in the cast.
