The 67th League Cup final returns to Wembley, with Manchester City defending the trophy they won there against Arsenal a year before.
The 67th League Cup final comes to Wembley Stadium on Sunday 21 March 2027, with Manchester City defending the trophy they won there against Arsenal a year before.
The tournament began in the 1960-61 season as the Football League’s own midweek floodlit cup, conceived by Stanley Rous and put into practice by Alan Hardaker. Aston Villa won the first final, over two legs against Rotherham United, and the final became a single match at Wembley in 1967.
All 92 clubs of the Premier League and the English Football League enter. Every round before the final is drawn at random, so a lower-division side can reach Wembley in March. Liverpool hold the record with ten wins.
City beat Arsenal 2-0 in the 2026 final, with two Nico O’Reilly goals four minutes apart. It gave them a ninth League Cup and Pep Guardiola his 19th trophy at the club.
The finalists come through two-legged semi-finals in January and February, after the quarter-finals in December. The winners take a place in the following season’s UEFA Conference League, and it is the 20th year in succession that the rebuilt Wembley stages the final.
