Danny Boyle and Alex Garland returned to the world they opened with 28 Days Later, premiering its sequel in Leicester Square with Jodie Comer and Ralph Fiennes.

Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later, sequel to 28 Days Later, had its world premiere at the Odeon Luxe Leicester Square in the West End on Wednesday 18 June 2025. Alex Garland, who wrote the first film, joined him.

Boyle was born in Radcliffe, Lancashire, in 1956 and trained in theatre, directing at the Royal Court from 1982 before he turned to film. His debut, Shallow Grave, won the BAFTA for Best British Film, and Trainspotting followed a year later.

Slumdog Millionaire brought him the Academy Award for Best Director. In 2012 he was artistic director of the opening ceremony of the London Olympic Games.

The new film is the third in the series, with Cillian Murphy, star of the first, as an executive producer. It follows survivors on the tidal island of Lindisfarne, where a father takes his twelve-year-old son to the mainland for the first time.

It was shot back to back with its sequel, The Bone Temple, directed by Nia DaCosta. 28 Years Later went on to gross $151 million worldwide.

Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes and Alfie Williams joined Boyle and Garland on the carpet.
