Tuesday, 13 January 2026 BFI IMAX · South Bank

Nia DaCosta’s sequel to 28 Years Later had its world premiere at the BFI IMAX, with Cillian Murphy, Danny Boyle and Alex Garland among its makers on the carpet.

Nia DaCosta’s 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple had its world premiere at the BFI IMAX in Waterloo on Tuesday 13 January 2026, the day Sony released it in British cinemas in a double bill with 28 Years Later.

DaCosta was born in Brooklyn in 1989, grew up in Harlem and meant at first to be a poet. Reading Heart of Darkness at sixteen led her to Apocalypse Now, and from there to the directors of the New Hollywood. Her first feature, Little Woods, won the Nora Ephron Award at Tribeca in 2018. She directed episodes of Top Boy, and Candyman made her the first Black woman director to open a film at number one in American cinemas. The Marvels and Hedda followed.

The Bone Temple is the fourth film in the series Danny Boyle and Alex Garland began with 28 Days Later in 2002. Garland wrote it, and it was shot back to back with the third film. Spike, played by Alfie Williams, falls in with Jimmy Crystal’s cult, while Ralph Fiennes’s Dr Kelson forms an unexpected bond with Samson, an Alpha Infected.

Cillian Murphy, star of the first film and executive producer of this one, joined Boyle, Garland and DaCosta at Waterloo, with Jack O’Connell, who plays Jimmy Crystal, and Williams, Erin Kellyman, Chi Lewis-Parry and Emma Laird of the cast.
