An interactive exhibition of artists’ books and book-art objects by forty-four Greek and British artists explored experimental approaches to the book form at the Hellenic Centre.
Greek and British artists’ books shared the Friends Room at The Hellenic Centre in Marylebone from Tuesday 14 October to Friday 28 November 2025. Project 2 Athens and Christina Mitrentse curated the exhibition.
The show took its title from a term coined by the art writer Michael Hampton. It asked what happens when a book’s legibility is disrupted, and it invited visitors to hold, touch and activate the objects.
Forty-four visual artists, curators, publishers and theorists from Greece and the UK contributed artists’ books, book-art objects, ephemera and journals. The work ranged across painting, printmaking, poetry, bookbinding, sculpture, sound and photography, setting personal narratives beside social, political, ecological and gender themes.
It was London’s first comprehensive showing of contemporary work in the form from both countries in dialogue. The private view opened with a performance built from the uncut pages of a photobook, followed by a curators’ conversation and a guided tour.
Project 2 Athens is the artists’ initiative led by Fiona Mouzakitis and the photographer Despina Stavrou.
Mitrentse is a Greek-born, London-based artist whose practice has treated the book as both form and metaphor for two decades, since her MA at Chelsea College of Art and Design.
