The Hellenic Centre marks the centenary of Giorgos Ioannou’s birth with the first major presentation of his work in Britain. Ioannou took the vocabulary of Pop Art — the flat colour, the comic-strip line, the borrowed image — and turned it on the Greece of the colonels, so that the brightness of the surface carries the politics underneath it. The works gathered here date from the late 1960s and the 1970s, the years of the dictatorship, and the show reads them for the political undercurrents that surfaced in his practice across that decade.
It opens in Frieze week, with a private view on Tuesday 13 October and late Thursday hours through the run.
