The Savoy has anchored the bend of the Strand above the Thames since 1889, the first luxury hotel in Britain wired for electric light and lifts, and it still keeps a riverside entrance reserved for arrivals to its event floors. The address carries genuine theatrical weight: Gilbert and Sullivan's operas played next door at the Savoy Theatre, and the hotel's private rooms still bear their names, from Pinafore to Iolanthe. After a three-year, £220 million restoration it reopened in 2010, and a programme of room and restaurant works runs on through 2027.
For a DJ-led night the draw is the Lancaster Ballroom at river level: Art Deco detailing, a clear pillar-free floor built for dancing, and its own permanent stage, a rarity among London hotel rooms. The Beaufort Bar is the other natural fit, a jet-black and gold former cabaret lounge with a raised stage and a theatrical streak, available for exclusive hire while it sits between public reopenings. Around them sit a spread of named period rooms, the bright double-height River Rooms over Embankment Gardens, the grand Abraham Lincoln Room and its adjoining Manhattan Room, and the timber-panelled Pinafore.
The in-house events team handles planning, florals and production through the hotel's AV partner, and the separate riverside entrance gives a private arrival away from the main lobby. It is a heritage address that takes entertainment seriously rather than tolerating it.
