/ About
Philippe Starck's St Martins Lane has been a fixture of the West End's social life since it opened behind a glass facade off the theatre district in 1999. The lobby still trades on the surreal Starck flourishes that made the hotel famous, oversized gold furniture, a wall of changing colour and a sense of theatre that matches the streets outside. Now run under the Morgans Originals collection, it keeps the irreverent design-hotel spirit rather than the uniform polish of a corporate property.
The rooms that matter for a private event run from the polished to the clandestine. Blind Spot, reached through a concealed door behind the tea counter, is a low-lit cocktail lounge with leather seating, a brass-and-glass centrepiece and a resident DJ holding vinyl and live jazz nights through the week. The Den is its rosewood-panelled counterpart, all tartan cushions, oil paintings and a backgammon table. Upstairs, the two-bedroom Penthouse opens onto floor-to-ceiling windows framing the dome of the Coliseum and the city skyline, and flexes between in-room chef dinners, cocktail receptions and launches.
For larger gatherings the daylit Studios open onto a terrace and take a cabaret layout or a standing reception, while Restaurant 45 can clear its floor and bring in a bar and DJ booth for an exclusive takeover. The marble-walled Backroom and the recently launched Basement, the latter wired with a screen, mood lighting and DJ equipment, round out a set of genuinely distinct spaces, each with its own character. The Basement combines with The Den for a larger party footprint.
