/ About
Seven Georgian townhouses on Montague Street, built in 1806 and looking straight across a private garden square to the British Museum, form Red Carnation's Bloomsbury address. The group took the property on in 1996 and rebuilt it into its present form: garden-facing conservatories, a ground-floor lounge with a working fireplace, and a wood deck that changes character with the seasons rather than sitting still all year.
That deck is the thing people who know Bloomsbury actually book the Montague for. Every summer it becomes the Beach Bar, complete with sand underfoot, a thatched roof and a hanging rattan chair; every winter it turns into the Montague Ski Lodge, timber-clad and strung with lights, a projected mountain view standing in for the Alps. Both sit alongside eight further named rooms — from the mirrored, leopard-print Large Conservatory next to the hotel's own bar through to the Great Russell Suite, the largest room in the house at 150 standing and licensed for wedding ceremonies.
For a private event it reads less like a hotel function floor and more like a series of distinct small rooms that happen to share one address, each with its own personality rather than a single ballroom stretched to fit every booking.
/ Rooms Available
Great Russell Suite
Exclusive HireThe largest room in the hotel: a lower-ground-floor suite with its own private bar, registration area and cloakroom, opening onto the outdoor Wood Deck. Licensed for wedding ceremonies and dinner dances, and the room that carries the venue's headline capacity.
The Beach Bar
Exclusive HireThe Wood Deck's summer transformation: real sand underfoot, a thatched roof, a hanging rattan chair and a tiki-style bar. A seasonal exclusive-hire experience rather than a year-round room — confirm dates with the events team.
Wood Deck
Exclusive HireA ground-floor timber deck overlooking Montague Street Gardens that gives the hotel its seasonal identity — dressed each summer as the Beach Bar and each winter as the Montague Ski Lodge, and bookable in its evergreen form the rest of the year. Adjoins the Great Russell Suite.
Leopard Bar Terrace
Semi PrivateA bright, retractable-roof conservatory terrace beside the Leopard Bar, fully air-conditioned for year-round use.
Woburn Suite
PrivateA lower-ground-floor room with its own small conservatory area for natural daylight, suited to board meetings and formal dinners alike.
Large Conservatory
Semi PrivateA leopard-print, skylit conservatory directly off the Leopard Bar — the room shares the bar's identity and is popular for private dining parties as much as meetings.
Bloomsbury Suite
PrivateA medium-sized meeting room that doubles as a syndicate room for larger conferences, or a private dining room for smaller groups.
Garden Terrace
Semi PrivateAn al fresco deck overlooking the private garden square, dressed in the same evergreen style year-round.
The Montague Ski Lodge
Exclusive HireThe Garden Terrace's winter transformation: a timber-clad lodge strung with fairy lights, a projected mountain backdrop, sheepskin throws and mulled-wine service. A seasonal exclusive-hire experience — confirm dates with the events team.
Small Conservatory
PrivateThe hotel's intimate orangery-style sitting room — skylit, with Staffordshire dogs on the mantel — used as a welcome space for events or a private dining room for the smallest gatherings.
