Bertrand's Townhouse

Three Georgian townhouses on Bedford Place were joined behind one front door and opened in December 2025 as Bertrand's Townhouse, a 43-room hotel named for Bertrand Russell, who kept company with the Bloomsbury Set a few squares away. Studio Moren led the interiors. Original cornicing and decorative fireplaces survived the conversion, and around them sit ochre and indigo walls, brass and natural wood, and a picture hang dense enough to read as a private collection. There is no reception desk in the usual sense: arrivals are handled in the hall, on black and white tiles, under a Murano chandelier.

Ottie's Salon holds the whole ground floor and is the reason the house matters to a private event. The front drawing room carries a gold-leaf ceiling, a curved green sofa and walls hung floor to cornice with oils and prints. Next to it, a timber bar with green stools opens onto the garden. Behind that is the cigar lounge, its humidor cabinets lit and glazed, with doors out to the terrace. The salon runs as an all-day room and turns speakeasy after dark, with live jazz twice a week.

Outside, a three-part terrace runs behind the houses, with overhead heaters, a barbecue station and The Cigar Garden, where weathered stone, brick and heavy planting frame trolley stations of spirits and cigars. What the house does not have is a ballroom, a conference floor or a hire brochure, and that is the point of it. The offer is the ground floor taken privately, arranged by the team rather than bought off a page, on a Bloomsbury street quiet enough to keep a late evening to itself.
