/ About

Sir Edwin Lutyens designed this Great Russell Street building in 1928 as the YWCA's Central Club, and its bones still show: Corinthian pilasters flank the doorways, a double-height entrance hall sits behind them, and the interiors he drew for London's emancipated women in the 1930s survive as the frame for a very different kind of hospitality. The Doyle family relaunched it as The Bloomsbury after the 2007 Jurys Doyle split, keeping the Lutyens spiderback chairs and parquet floors and building the hotel's private-event programme around the rooms he left behind — the George V Hall's hand-painted travel-themed wallpaper, Queen Mary Hall's Waterford crystal chandeliers, and the deconsecrated chapel that gives The Chapel its double-height ceiling and stained glass.

Dalloway Terrace, the flower-draped al fresco dining room under a retractable roof, and The Coral Room, a coral-walled salon bar built around a sweeping marble counter and Murano chandeliers, are the two spaces most written about, but the private-hire roster runs deeper: the underground Bloomsbury Club stays open late with AV built in for live music, the book-lined Seamus Heaney Library was opened by the poet himself in 2011, and the Tavistock Suites offer a blank-canvas lower-ground-floor room for anything a client wants to build in it.

For a DJ-led evening, the pairing that works is the Coral Room or Bloomsbury Club for the reception and George V Hall or Queen Mary Hall for the dinner and dancing that follows — two ballroom-scale rooms in a single central London address, each with its own separate bar.
