/ About
The Mandrake is Fitzrovia's design-led boutique hotel, a theatrical retreat behind a discreet Newman Street frontage. Its heart is a foliage-draped courtyard where two 150-year-old Tasmanian tree ferns rise through the open air, jasmine and passionflower trail down the timber galleries, and the Jurema Terrace gathers around them. Inside, surrealist murals, antique taxidermy and an in-house art collection set a sensuous, slightly subversive tone that has made the hotel a fixture for fashion and music events.
The building offers an unusual spread of private spaces for intimate gatherings. YOPO and its adjoining bar run Latin-American small plates and a serious cocktail programme; Waeska is the late-opening bar, candlelit and low; Masha Hari is a screening and dining theatre beneath a hand-drawn mural; the red-lit Private Dining Room, the Library, the glazed Greenhouse and the Penthouse with its private roof terrace round out the offer. The courtyard and Jurema Terrace are the signature settings, equally suited to a seated dinner or a standing reception with a DJ.
Waeska holds a late licence through the small hours toward the weekend, and the courtyard's enclosure makes it a natural room for music after dark. For exclusive hire the whole hotel, including all 33 bedrooms, can be taken over. It is the rare central London address where a private dinner can carry on into a proper late-night party without leaving the building.
