/ About

The Barbary opened in Neal's Yard in 2016 with a single idea it has never diluted: one horseshoe counter of 24 seats built around an open fire, with the cooking in full view. The menu follows the Barbary Coast, from the mountain villages of Spain and Morocco along the Atlantic and into the Mediterranean. It has held a Michelin Bib Gourmand since 2017. Studio Paskin, the group behind The Palomar, runs it.

The room is small and deliberately hard to spot. Neal's Yard is a courtyard rather than a street, and the restaurant marks itself with a brass plate at the door and little else. There is no private dining room, no partition and no second floor; you sit at the counter or you do not sit.

That is what makes the buyout worth knowing about. Exclusive hire takes the whole restaurant for 24 guests, with the kitchen working in the middle of the party and menus written around the occasion. It reads as dinner in a private kitchen rather than a function, which is the right shape for a milestone table, a client dinner or a close celebration.

The whole restaurant, taken for one party. Twenty-four stools run around a horseshoe counter set into plaster walls, with the open fire and the kitchen inside the curve, so the cooking happens at arm's length all evening. Menus are written around the occasion and a dedicated team works the room throughout.
