/ About

The Royal Garden Hotel has held the corner of Kensington High Street and Kensington Gardens since 1965, when Colonel Richard Seifert's ten-storey building replaced the Victorian Royal Palace Hotel on the same ground. Three hundred and ninety-six bedrooms sit above eleven bookable spaces; the England side that won the 1966 World Cup celebrated here, and the guest book since has run from The Beatles to ABBA.

The ballroom is the Palace Suite: 4,935 square feet without a pillar in it, with its own foyer, two private entrances and a street-level goods door. It seats 440 for dinner and holds 800 for a reception, and divides into the St James and Buckingham Suites when the room is too large. A portable stage, a dance floor and a colour-changing lighting installation are the hotel's own. One floor up, the mezzanine carries the York and Lancaster Suites and Piano Kensington, the hotel's bar, where a resident pianist plays requests from five in the evening, Tuesday to Saturday. The three can be taken together as a private floor.

Dining is Origin Kensington, seasonal British with two AA Rosettes and windows onto the gardens, and Min Jiang on the tenth floor, where the Cantonese and Sichuan kitchen sends out wood-fired Beijing duck above the treeline. The Kensington Suite divides into the Victoria and Albert; five boardrooms sit along the quieter corridors, each with a screen and its own servery. Outside caterers are permitted, halal and kosher among them, and there are 147 parking spaces on site, a detail that earns its keep when four hundred people arrive at once.
