/ About
Behind a green-painted shopfront on Bruton Lane, Mr Fogg's Residence is dressed as the Mayfair home of Phileas J. Fogg, and the conceit is carried to the last inch. Penny-farthings and taxidermy hang from the ceiling, the walls are covered floor to cornice with maps, portraits and curios brought back from an imagined circumnavigation, and the bottle wall behind the counter runs the full width of the room.
The bar takes the whole ground floor and is hired exclusively rather than by the room, which suits a party that wants the building to itself. Seating is a mix of red velvet chairs, patterned wing-backs and a leaded window bay; the room holds a hundred and fifty standing. A resident DJ plays Friday and Saturday nights until two, and the house runs its own programme of explorer talks and Victorian murder mysteries alongside private bookings.
Cocktails are the reason most people come, served from a list that leans on the travel theme without labouring it, with canapés and bowls from the kitchen. It sits a short walk from Berkeley Square and Green Park, and belongs to the same group as Cahoots and Barts.
