/ About

Engel occupies the north mezzanine of the Royal Exchange, a floor above the Grade I listed building's courtyard. The name is German for angel, taken from Der Blaue Engel, the 1930 film starring Marlene Dietrich. Karen Taylor of Pattern Haus designed the interiors, and they carry the reference plainly: a circular bar in polished brass and marble, velvet couches and wing-back chairs, deep reds and champagne gold. It opened in June 2024, the first project from Des Gunewardena's D3 Collective.

The venue works as three parts. Engel Bar is the main floor, arranged in seating groups around the bar and open to the public most of the week; it takes 150 standing on an exclusive hire, and semi-exclusive arrangements suit smaller groups. Engel Live is the adjoining entertainment lounge, 50 seated or 100 standing, with a layout that moves between intimate tables and long communal ones. Taken together the two make one continuous area for 250 standing. The seasonal terrace runs from the Royal Exchange portico down to the pavement and hires Monday to Friday for drinks receptions.

Live music runs Wednesday and Thursday evenings, with DJs, singers and burlesque across the weekend, so the room already knows what to do with a night built around sound. Menus come from the Engel kitchen or from Jang, the Korean-Japanese restaurant on the south mezzanine, and live music can be arranged for a private event on request. Access to the premises is until 23:30, with an extension available by arrangement.

The bar and the entertainment lounge open into one continuous area across two sides of the mezzanine. Taken exclusively this is the largest space Engel hires on its own, and it suits larger parties and corporate events. Beyond it, Engel and the neighbouring Jang can be booked together across the whole mezzanine.
