Chutney Mary

Chutney Mary opened on the King's Road in 1990 and spent twenty-five years as one of Chelsea's defining Indian restaurants. In 2015 it moved to St James's Street, taking over the premises that had been Marco Pierre White's Wheelers and adding a light-filled anteroom at street level that became the Pukka Bar. It belongs to The India Collection, the group behind Amaya and Veeraswamy.

The cooking is modern regional Indian, drawn from across the subcontinent and plated for a St James's crowd. Guests descend from the Pukka Bar into a low-lit dining room hung with commissioned Indian art, among the more atmospheric rooms in the area. The bar works well on its own, with a long timber communal table, carved stone and leather, and a cocktail list built around the kitchen's spicing.

For private events there are two dedicated rooms. The Club Room seats up to 32 for dinner or holds 45 for a reception, set beneath a mural of a Mughal feast; the Crystal Room takes an intimate party of up to 16. The Pukka Bar's long table seats 12, and smaller groups can be hosted at tables within the main dining room.
