Chourangi

Chourangi brings the food of Calcutta to a pedestrianised corner off Marble Arch, a few steps from Oxford Street. The name nods to the city's grand colonial thoroughfare, and the room reads the same way: Indian limestone floors, rattan-teak furniture, gilded fretwork screens and slow-turning ceiling fans, with a marble-topped bar backed by ranks of bottles and cane-backed chairs at every table. It is the London restaurant of chef-restaurateur Anjan Chatterjee, with Chef Jolly as culinary director, and the kitchen works the layered, 300-year Calcutta table that folds British, Armenian, Portuguese and Chinese influence into Bengali cooking.

The ground-floor dining room seats around seventy-five and opens onto a heated alfresco terrace on Old Quebec Street, so a private party can spill outdoors in warm weather. There is no separate function suite: groups take a semi-private section of the room, or the restaurant is hired whole for an exclusive event, with the kitchen building bespoke menus around the occasion. The bar mixes a full cocktail list alongside the wine.

For a DJ-led evening the appeal is a single, characterful room that can be taken over entirely, with its own bar and terrace, in a prime Marylebone position minutes from Marble Arch. Private hire and group bookings are arranged directly with the restaurant.
