Bellamy's

Tucked at the quiet end of Bruton Place, a cobbled mews behind Berkeley Square, Bellamy's has kept the same discreet address since 2004. Gavin Rankin opened it after years as managing director of Mark Birley's Annabel's, and brought much of that world with him: the chef, the manager and a certain unhurried civility. Tim Flynn designed the room as a Franco-Belgian brasserie, all green banquettes, vintage René Gruau and travel-poster prints, wall mirrors and white linen. Regulars still describe it as a club without a subscription. The late Queen Elizabeth II dined here, one of the few restaurants in the country where she did.

The brasserie runs as one continuous ground-floor space. An oyster and sandwich bar fronts the room by day, shucking Belon and Fines de Claire and building the house open sandwiches; by evening the same corner becomes an intimate cocktail bar, its red walls hung with framed prints and lit by shaded lamps. The wine list is a serious one, anchored by a wine bar at the heart of the dining room. There is no amplified music and no dance floor; the tone is conversation, not spectacle.

For a private event Bellamy's is taken as a whole, exclusively, by arrangement with the house. It suits a refined lunch, a milestone dinner or a discreet reception for people who want Mayfair without noise, rather than a late party. Capacities are settled directly with the restaurant.
