10-11 Carlton House Terrace is the London home of the British Academy, and it is two Grade I listed townhouses behind one stucco front. It stands on the terrace above The Mall, looking across St James's Park towards Whitehall, and it was once the residence of William Gladstone.
Ten rooms hire across three floors, and they are not variations on one another. The Council Room on the first floor is the grand one: gilded plasterwork, a parquet floor, portraits and chandeliers, taking 90 for a reception or 70 at table. The Beatrice Webb Room opens into its own gallery for 200 standing, the largest single space in the building. On the lower ground floor the SHAPE Room is a modern, screen-led space for 150. The Lee Library and the Reading Room both carry their shelves into the room, and the Music Room and the Radhakrishnan Room hold the smaller dinners.
Daylight reaches every room, which is rarer in this kind of building than it sounds. Catering is in-house through Searcys. The whole building takes an exclusive hire for up to 498 standing, and Carlton House Terrace is quiet in a way that Trafalgar Square, a few minutes away, is not.

Beatrice Webb Room & Gallery
PrivateThe largest space in the building, on the first floor, opening into its own gallery so the two hire together for a standing reception or apart for a dinner. Full-height windows to the front and a pair of chandeliers.
SHAPE Room
PrivateA modern room on the lower ground floor built around a full-width screen and timber panelling, designed for presentation-led events. The most flexible space in the house and the second largest.
Council Room
PrivateThe grandest room in the building: gilded plasterwork, a parquet floor, portraits on the walls and chandeliers overhead, with windows onto the terrace front. It takes a seated dinner of 70 or a reception of 90.
Reading Room
PrivateA ground-floor room with arched windows and chandeliers, used for long-table dinners and round-table lunches alike. Reception capacity matches the Council Room at 90.
Barnard Room
PrivateA first-floor room with a patterned carpet and framed prints, laid for a single long table of 50 or a reception of 80. The most private of the dining rooms.
Lecture Room
PrivateA lower-ground-floor room finished in plain white with a hanging screen, taking a reception of 80 or a theatre-style audience of 72.
Music Room
PrivateA first-floor room with a fireplace, moulded ceiling and windows onto the park side, furnished with lounge seating for a drinks reception of 80.
Radhakrishnan Room
PrivateA first-floor room in soft green with tall windows and framed drawings, laid for a long table of 50 or a reception of 70.
Wohl Gallery
PrivateA lower-ground-floor gallery hung with contemporary work, taking a reception of 70 or a cabaret layout of 35. It adjoins the SHAPE Room, so the two hire together for a larger event.
The Library
PrivateThe Lee Library on the ground floor, walled on three sides with books and lit by a chandelier, taking round tables for 50 or a reception of 60. The room most people ask for first.
