Callie Khouri's Oscar-winning road movie becomes a new stage musical, with songs by Neko Case, in its world premiere at the Young Vic.

Callie Khouri’s road film Thelma & Louise becomes a stage musical at the Young Vic in Waterloo, from Thursday 3 September to Saturday 24 October 2026. Neko Case writes the music and lyrics.

Khouri wrote the original film for the director Ridley Scott in 1991. Two women leave for a fishing trip and never go home after a roadside shooting turns the weekend into a fugitive drive across the American West.

Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis starred, and the film won Khouri the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. In 2016 it entered the Library of Congress National Film Registry.

Khouri has since written the Aretha Franklin biopic Respect and created the television series Nashville. For the stage she has written a new book, and no stage version of the story has existed before this one.

Case, the Grammy-nominated singer known for her solo records and the band the New Pornographers, makes her debut as a stage-musical composer.

Trip Cullman directs Rachel Tucker as Louise and Amy Lennox as Thelma. The Young Vic co-produces the show with Sonia Friedman Productions and Khouri’s own production company.
