Hokusai: Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji from the Iuchi Collection

20 October 2026 – 17 January 2027 Dulwich Picture Gallery · Dulwich

The complete Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, The Great Wave among them, is shown together in the UK for the first time, lent from the Iuchi Collection in Tokyo.

Katsushika Hokusai’s complete Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji hangs at Dulwich Picture Gallery in Dulwich from Tuesday 20 October 2026 to Sunday 17 January 2027. It is the first time the whole series has hung together in the UK.

Hokusai was born in Edo, present-day Tokyo, in 1760. He was in his seventies when the publisher Nishimura Yohachi issued the series from about 1830. Every colour needed its own woodblock.

The earliest sheets use Prussian blue, a pigment newly arrived from Europe, which Hokusai made fashionable. The series sold well enough that ten designs were added, and publication stopped at 46.

Among them are Under the Wave off Kanagawa, known as The Great Wave, and Fine Wind, Clear Morning, the Red Fuji. In 1896 a French critic wrote that the album had inspired the landscapes of the Impressionists.

All 46 prints come from the Iuchi Collection, on deposit at the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo. They include a rare variant of Red Fuji never before shown in the UK.

The gallery, founded in 1811 and housed in Sir John Soane’s building, is the world’s first purpose-built public art gallery.
