Cindy Sherman brought Fabric Matrons to London, new photographs of women draped in fabric, several made with Chanel’s tweeds and jewellery at the house’s invitation.
Cindy Sherman, her own model for more than five decades, gave her series Fabric Matrons its London debut at Hauser & Wirth London in Mayfair on Tuesday 13 October 2026.
She was born in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, in 1954 and turned to photography at Buffalo State College in the early 1970s. She came to prominence later that decade with the Pictures Generation, using wigs, prosthetics, make-up and staging to test familiar types of female identity.
Her work with Chanel began with Ominous Landscapes of 2010 to 2012, in which her characters wore garments from the house’s archive. Fabric Matrons started with a giveaway magazine from a high-end store in the Hamptons.
She answered it with lengths of fabric used as costume and backdrop at once. At Chanel’s invitation she worked the house’s tweeds and its jewellery into several pictures.
The reception opened the gallery’s Frieze week on Savile Row.
Sherman has said the series goes “beyond beauty” into her sitters’ neuroses, “probably my own”. The chromogenic prints, all made in 2026, hang until 23 December.
