The Voice of Greece — Mikis Theodorakis Centenary with Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra

The Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra, led by its founder Marios Papadopoulos, gathered at Cadogan Hall to mark the centenary of Mikis Theodorakis, the composer who carried Greek folk and popular song to international audiences. The evening paired the Zorbas Suite for flute and orchestra with a selection of Theodorakis’s beloved songs, sung by the celebrated Greek vocalist Alkistis Protopsalti. The programme opened with the world premiere of Nestor Taylor’s Invocation for voice and orchestra, featuring mezzo-soprano Melina Jaharis. Held in the intimate acoustics of Sloane Terrace, it was a refined tribute to one of Greece’s defining musical voices.
