Piano Recital with Costas Fotopoulos

Costas Fotopoulos builds the recital on a pairing of 1685: three of Domenico Scarlatti’s more inventive harpsichord sonatas, then the sixth of Bach’s keyboard Partitas. Published in 1731 and running to seven movements, it is the most demanding of that set and arguably the finest.

The second half is Chopin — the second of the Op. 62 Nocturnes, and the First Ballade in G minor, which is both late and among the most played things he wrote. Fotopoulos follows them with his own Hommage à Chopin, composed as a tribute, then two of Granados’ Twelve Spanish Dances, and closes on Guido Agosti’s piano transcription of three movements from Stravinsky’s Firebird.

Seven o’clock at the Hellenic Centre. The house’s autumn programme runs mostly to talks and conversations, and this is the month’s one evening given over entirely to playing.
