The Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra marked Cyprus’s Presidency of the European Union with a flagship concert at Cadogan Hall, led by the Cypriot maestro Marios Papadopoulos. The programme opened with Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy, featuring pianist Anna Avramidou, before the orchestra, four vocal soloists and the Crouch End Festival Chorus delivered Symphony No. 9, the ‘Choral’. Supported by the Cultural Section of the Cyprus High Commission, the evening drew the Hellenic and Cypriot community to Sloane Terrace for a celebration of European unity through music. It was a fitting expression of the ode to joy at the heart of Beethoven’s final symphony.
