Tate Modern occupies the former Bankside Power Station on the south bank of the Thames, a Giles Gilbert Scott building converted by Herzog & de Meuron and opened as a gallery in 2000. Its spaces are hired through Tate Events, and the range is wide: the vast Turbine Hall at ground level, raw industrial chambers below it, and quieter top-floor rooms looking north across the river to St Paul's.
The Turbine Hall is the headline space, 155 metres long beneath a roof rising to 26 metres, taking up to 700 guests for dinner or 1,200 for a standing reception. Below ground, the Tanks are circular concrete chambers that once held the station's oil, now used for receptions and performance. Higher up, the East Room and Level 10 open onto skyline views, the Members Bar has a river terrace, and the Starr Cinema provides a screening room for presentations.
The building suits events at scale, from gallery-wide receptions to seated dinners in the concourses and dining rooms. Tate does not publish a music or late-licence policy for private hire, so amplified sound and finishing times are agreed with the events team on a per-event basis.
