/ About
South Lodge was built as a private family home in the 1880s and is now an Exclusive Collection country-house hotel at Lower Beeding, near Horsham, set in 93 acres with views to the South Downs. The original house keeps its carved woodwork and period wallpaper, and the estate runs to 96 bedrooms, a 44,000 sq ft spa and three restaurants, among them The Pass, Ben Wilkinson's Michelin-starred tasting counter inside the kitchen.
For a celebration, Gladstone is the room to know. It sits on the ground floor under ornate cornicing and chandeliers, with triple-aspect windows over the Downs, and seats 130 for dinner. Glyndebourne on the first floor takes 70 beneath a peaked ceiling, Disraeli has its own terrace for 50, and Camellia Two, a dining room in the Victorian house, suits a dinner for twenty. The Pass seats 28 for a private tasting menu.
Weddings use a wrought-iron pavilion on the lawn and Wordsworth, the lower-ground suite with a secret doorway for the entrance. There are 13 function rooms in all, and the whole hotel can be taken on an exclusive-use basis, grounds, spa and helipad included. Gatwick is 25 minutes away and London Victoria 50 minutes by train.
