Salters' Hall

Salters' Hall is the livery hall of the Worshipful Company of Salters, one of the twelve great livery companies of the City of London, chartered in 1394. Its previous hall, on St Swithin's Lane, was destroyed in the Blitz; the current building on London Wall Place (the street's earlier name was Fore Street, and the postcode has not changed) was Sir Basil Spence's final work, completed in 1976 by his successor practice. Grade II listed, its knapped and fluted concrete exterior is a rare central London example of Brutalist livery architecture. A 2013-2016 refurbishment by dMFK Architects added a glazed entrance pavilion and restored the ceremonial rooms; the Duke of Kent, who had opened the original hall, returned to reopen it in June 2016, and the project won a RIBA London Award in 2018.

Four spaces are available for hire. The Main Hall is the grand double-height room, its fluted ash panelling and gallery giving it what the Company calls outstanding acoustics. The Court Room, rosewood-panelled and hung with portraits of past Masters, is smaller and more intimate. The Dining Room sits on a sixth-floor mezzanine overlooking the Main Hall, its walls a deep plum. Below, a vaulted corridor known as the Salt Lobby, modelled on a salt cave, displays the Company's collection of silver saltcellars. Outside, the Garden was designed by the late David Hicks and incorporates a preserved stretch of the old London Wall, and is described by the Company as the largest landscaped area created in the Square Mile since the First World War.

The whole venue takes exclusive hire for up to 300 on a standing reception, with the Main Hall seating 130 for a formal dinner. Catering runs exclusively through Seasoned, the Company's in-house partner, with halal and kosher menus available. Close to Moorgate and the Barbican, it is available for corporate dinners, conferences and private celebrations.
