/ About
Carbone is the Italian-American restaurant Mario Carbone, Rich Torrisi and Jeff Zalaznick opened in Greenwich Village in 2013, and which their Major Food Group has since carried to Miami, Las Vegas, Hong Kong and beyond. London is its first European outpost, set inside 30 Grosvenor Square, the former American Embassy that now houses the Chancery Rosewood hotel. The kitchen keeps to the original script: a tableside Caesar, spicy rigatoni vodka, veal parmesan and Dover sole filleted at the table.
The rooms are as much the draw as the cooking. Ken Fulk designed the interiors: a red staircase drops from the street-level salon to the main dining floor below, where checkerboard marble floors and burgundy banquettes set a mid-century New York tone. Contemporary art chosen by the dealer Vito Schnabel hangs throughout, with pieces by Rita Ackermann, Rene Ricard and Ai Weiwei. A cocktail bar runs off to one side.
Several spaces take private bookings. The wood-panelled Private Dining Room seats 28 across two long tables beneath a coffered ceiling; the Back Dining Room holds 50 seated or 60 for a reception; and the street-level Street Salon takes smaller groups of around 20. The whole restaurant can be hired for larger evenings, with the events team building menus around the kitchen's greatest hits.
