Apothecaries' Hall

The whole Hall taken on one hire: the Great Hall, the Court Room, the Parlour, the Champagne Bar and the courtyard, which is included in the Hall hire and is not let on its own. The Great Hall carries the seated dinner, the courtyard and bar take the reception, and guests move between them through the seventeenth-century staircase hall.

A paved quadrangle reached through the archway from Black Friars Lane, refurbished to a white and blue facade and screened from the street on every side. It is the one part of the venue where dancing is permitted: the Hall's own weddings copy sells "drinks and dancing in the courtyard garden". The Great Hall serves as the wet-weather alternative. Included in the Hall hire rather than let separately.

The principal room, 60ft by 30ft, furnished much as it was in 1670: a carved screen at the south end, a minstrels' gallery at the north, life-size portraits of past Masters and Officers, and stained glass carrying their coats of arms. A 24-branch candelabrum, given to the Society in 1736 by Sir Benjamin Rawling, hangs from the coffered ceiling. Used for seated dinners, receptions and conferences. Dancing is not permitted in this room.

Oak panelled and of the same period as the Great Hall, 30ft square, dominated by two large stained-glass windows: one the Society's coat of arms, the other the Stuart royal arms. Portraits line the walls, and the painting over the fireplace is of Gideon de Laune, apothecary to Queen Anne and the Society's founder, presented in 1641. Warm and close at a long table. Can be let on its own.

Carpeted, brightly lit and air-conditioned, with tall windows of botanical stained glass and a portrait over the marble chimneypiece. A wall-to-wall showcase holds the Society's collection of apothecaries' drug jars and pill tiles. It adjoins the Court Room through a connecting door, and can be let on its own.
