Anne-Marie Duff plays Julie Robson in Helen Edmundson’s new play Some Woman at the National Theatre on the South Bank from Wednesday 7 October 2026. Blanche McIntyre directs the run in the Dorfman Theatre, which ends on Saturday 21 November.
Edmundson was born in Liverpool in 1964 and made her name adapting large novels for the stage. Her adaptations include Anna Karenina in 1992, The Mill on the Floss in 1994, Coram Boy in 2006 and Small Island in 2019. She writes originals too, The Clearing and Queen Anne among them.
The play follows Julie, overlooked at work and at home, until an encounter on a station platform turns every eye on her. She finds herself compelled to make a stand. It received an Edgerton Foundation New Play Award.
It is the only wholly original work on the National’s autumn slate. Everything else across the building’s three stages this season is an adaptation, a revival or a transfer.
Duff has spent thirty years in undemonstrative parts, from Saint Joan to Husbands and Sons and, more recently, Bad Sisters. Tom McCall and Ioanna Kimbook complete the company.
