Sam Smith plays an eight-night run at the London Coliseum from 8 to 19 September 2026, the London leg of the global To Be Free residencies, with a different opener each night.
Sam Smith was born in London in 1992 and raised in a Cambridgeshire village, the child of a truck driver and a banker, and went through six managers before moving back to the city at eighteen to find a seventh. The break came on somebody else’s record: “Latch”, with Disclosure, in 2012. In the Lonely Hour followed in 2014 and took four Grammy Awards in one night, including record of the year and song of the year for “Stay with Me”, a ballad sung almost entirely in falsetto and written after a man who did not want them.
They came out as nonbinary in 2019 and have used they/them since. “Unholy”, with Kim Petras, went to number one in the United States in October 2022, the first time an openly nonbinary and an openly transgender solo artist had done it. Hazel Eyes, the fifth album, came out on 21 August 2026 and is about requited love for a change.
To Be Free is a residency rather than a tour, and the London chapter runs eight nights at the Coliseum between 8 and 19 September 2026. The room is the largest theatre in the West End and an opera house, not an arena, which is the decision that shapes the evening. A different singer opens each night, eight of them, named in the billing.
