Pride transfers from the National to the Bridge Theatre for six months, 12 November 2026 to 8 May 2027, after a sold-out Dorfman run.
In the summer of 1984 a group of lesbians and gay men in London started collecting money in buckets for the striking miners, on the reasoning that the police and the press were doing to the miners what they had spent years doing to them. Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners was founded on 30 June, ran out of Gay’s the Word bookshop, and twinned itself with one Welsh mining village in the Dulais valley. The village took the money, then sent its own people to London for Pride. A year later the miners’ union voted to put gay rights into Labour’s platform.
Stephen Beresford wrote that story as a film in 2014, which Matthew Warchus directed. They have now made it a musical, with an original score drawing on pop, rock, disco and Welsh choral writing rather than a jukebox of the period. Beresford has said the film was made because he could not find the story in any history of either movement, and the musical adds what a film could not: a company singing in two idioms at once.
It transfers to the Bridge Theatre from 12 November 2026 to 8 May 2027 after a Dorfman premiere that sold its entire season. Six months is an extraordinary booking for the Bridge, which normally runs a show for eight to twelve weeks, and it is the clearest available statement about how the National run went.
